Michael Becker Breaks Down Company Stock Purchase Plans in Yahoo Finance Feature

When Elon Musk encouraged SpaceX and Tesla employees to invest in their companies during liquidity events, his advice sparked debate. While he didn’t suggest putting all their savings in, many questioned how wise this strategy really is.

In a recent GOBankingRates article, later picked up on Yahoo Finance, titled “Elon Musk Gave His Employees This Unorthodox Wealth-Building Advice — Do Experts Agree?” Michael Becker, CFA, CFP®, and partner at Toberman Becker Wealth, shared his expert take.

“Investing in the company you work for can absolutely be a powerful wealth-building strategy,” Becker said, highlighting the advantages of discounted stock purchase plans and stock options."

However, he emphasized the importance of diversification to mitigate risk:

“I’d caution against putting too many financial eggs in one basket.”

Becker recommends contributing to employer stock programs just enough to maximize benefits, such as discounts or matches, and then shifting excess investments into a diversified portfolio. This balanced strategy helps capture opportunity without putting long-term financial health at risk.

Bottom Line

Michael Becker supports investing in employer stock, within limits. Use available incentives, but don’t rely solely on one company for your financial future. Diversification remains key.
